With rain threatening, the first round of eliminations was conducted on Saturday evening. Ross Taylor had the top qualifiers bye and recorded a 6.412 at 219.40. Rod Benjes scored an upset win with an improving 7.445 at 179.64 pass to beat Bardsley's broken gearshift 7.461 at 155.49 pass. Wayne Yearbury was to face Trevor Smith, who had had his transmission problem fixed in Auckland. Wayne shut down after his burnout when he heard a strange noise. It turned out to be a loose blower belt. Trevor advanced with a career best 7.071 at 193.16. The last pairing was between Craig Brown and Squig Miles. Squig recorded at 7.776 at 134.22, and it was enough to beat Craigs struggling 9.9 pass. That made Ross Taylor the only driver, from the top half of the field, to advance to the semi finals.

The semis will also be contested by Rod Benjes, Trevor Smith and Squig Miles.

Trevor Smith repaired a broken transmission to win his first round race.
