  • Chris Johnston wins Top Alcohol at the NZ Nationals: 20th Mar 2012

Over the weekend, at Fram Autolite Dragway, Chris Johnston picked up a big win at the IHRA New Zealand Nationals held in Meremere.

Johnston qualified the Vernon & Vazey sponsored Harcourts Hauler dragster in second position in the Arnotts Roadies Top Alcohol bracket, with a 5.673 at 248.52 mph. In top position was Anthony Marsh in the Marsh Motorsports / Mount Shop injected nitro dragster with a 5.517 at 264.65.

Bert King qualified fourth, with a wheelstand in his Goodyear dragster on every pass, with a best of 6.165 at 233.73.

Round one saw Marsh advance with a 5.488 bye run and Johnston defeated Dave Gauld in his altered with a 5.687.

Marsh went quicker again in the second round with a 5.433. His 269.46 speed made this the quickest and fastest pass of the meeting. Johnston defeated King, 5.675 at 248.61 to 6.117 at 225.63.

The final was now between to two quickest dragsters of Marsh and Johnston. Johnston reacted first with a .025 to Marshes .094. Both drivers recorded 5.7 second passes, but Marsh got close to the wall and had to lift. Johnston's 5.706 at 248.11, coupled with his start line lead, narrowly defeated Marshes 5.770 at a much slower 202.97. Johnstons win also secured the 2012 NZ Track Series Top Alcohol Championship.
